What We Look for Before Cutting Fabric

Weight, drape, surface texture, and recovery. Any cut made before understanding the material logic is an error.

Material identity moodboard

In the Dervish atelier, design is never imposed onto fabric as a finished sketch. When natural and regenerated fibres like hemp, linen, cupro, and lyocell arrive at the cutting table, the first task is reading their relationship with gravity and moisture.

The Five Material Layers

Before a fabric becomes a surface, it is a sequence: the initial connection at the fibre level, the yarn held by twist under tension, the crossing of warp and weft, and finally the surface accepting separation to become a garment.

“Sometimes design leads the material. Sometimes the material changes the design entirely.”

For instance, the drape stiffness of the fabric selected for the Continuum Dress governs the angle of gather along the binding cords. Rather than placing seams against the material’s inclination, we engineer structural solutions that flow with its natural gravity.
